An Actual Sociology Question

This one comes in from a friend. It was a homework question.

"If the structuring forces of capitalism (however disjunct) were implicated with those of colonialism (however hybrid), and if the deterritorialization movements of anti-colonialist sentiment and early decolonization emerge concomitantly with the revolutionary, anti-capitalist destratifications of Marxian social systems and state communist regimes, how and to what extent are the transnational fluctuations of diasporas and diasporized nation-states inextricable from the neocolonialist reterritorializations of global capitalism (such as free trade agreements, world financial markets, and the international divisions of labor, production and profit)? "

Sociology, making the obvious tedious.

The Rubber Room

Joel Klein vs. New York City teachers : The New Yorker

Incredible. I've heard rumors about the "Rubber Room" for a while, but I never knew it actually existed. Wow. It's easier to go to jail for murder than it is to be fired as a NYC teacher. Incredible.

Here is an AP blurb about it too.

Jobless NYC woman sues college for $70K in tuition

Jobless NYC woman sues college for $70K in tuition - Yahoo! News

Will she win? Probably not, but I support the concept wholeheartedly.

Why was it easier to get a loan for my car? And why is the loan RATE for my car a full 2% lower than my student loans? I'd return my education in a heartbeat if I could.

Stony Brook's 49th Commencement Ceremonies

Stony Brook's 49th Commencement Ceremonies

To all those interested, you can now listen to the complete broadcast HERE. Thanks to Jeff L, Jeff B, Angelo, Jim, Isobel and everyone else who helped make this a fantastic success.

Thanks to Norm Prusslin too, for teaching me the art of radio, and giving me my first shot at doing a graduation broadcast years ago.
